icon How I Spend My Time
By Chuck Smith

People think business owners control their own destiny. But too often, it’s the business that controls the owner and not other way around. As a business owner, it’s a good idea to step back and ask, “How do I spend my time?”

Time is our most precious, and least renewable, resource. The ways in which we spend our time are the most concrete, reliable indicators of our priorities.

Typically, every business owner (and employee, for that matter) has more to do than they can accomplish in any given, day, week or month. So choosing time priorities wisely is critical. I recently came across a concept from real estate appraisal that can be helpful in examining and prioritizing our activities: any given property should be evaluated by determining its “Highest Best Use” (HBU). In real estate unimproved land’s worth is a function of its value when put to its HBU (build a house on it) minus the cost of remediation (the cost of building the house). You can look at Wikipedia for more on real estate HBU.

For our purposes (in employment), we want to ask… As the leader, is your effort and time being put toward your Highest Best Use for the benefit of organization?

We’ve developed an exercise to help you figure out your personal HBU. This exercise helps identify “what I’m good at,” and “what I like to do” along with the converse. Is the organization best served (and are you happiest) if you spend more time in Sales, or Strategy or Operations? Are there tasks you’ve “always done” that you shouldn’t be doing any longer? Is there someone better suited to perform a duty that you aren’t so good at?

The goal is to help you to consciously spend your time on that which brings you the most value and reward.

I recently read a statistic that said the 80% of employees are unhappy in their jobs. (Start With Why, by Simon Sinek) I wonder what that stat would be if we all were allowed and encouraged to reach for our HBU?

If you’d like to learn more about HBUs, join me at an upcoming webinar or contact us to arrange an in-person seminar.

icon NewHire Upgrades and Features

By Leora Baumgarten

NewHire introduces innovations and upgrades for Spring. March and April in Chicago come with blooming crocuses, and a chilly wind off Lake Michigan, we’re heating things up by introducing new features and additional opportunities for customization to your NewHire toolkit.

The NewHire Job Board & Integrated Corporate Careers Page

We launched a new job board designed to help attract top talent while holding down recruitment advertising costs. Check out the job board that features NewHire clients’ open positions. When you purchase recruitment advertising through NewHire we will automatically publish the opportunity on this job board. Additionally, positions posted here also appear on Indeed.com, the fastest growing job board around.

NewHire Advantage customers now get a Corporate Careers webpage that is fully integrated into NewHire functionality. The job board has been an upgraded with a new look and feel and a search bar for careers pages displaying 11 or more openings. Link this careers page to your web site and drive candidate traffic! One click displays open positions on your branded careers page. With a second click, publish the position to the NewHire job board and to Indeed.com at NO ADDITIONAL charge.

If you already have a Careers Page from NewHire, let us know and we’ll provide you the new URL to access the upgrade and the new functionality. If you don’t have a careers page, join us at the upcoming webinar to learn more.

Introducing Tags – User Defined Tracking

No two jobs and no two candidates are identical! If you feel like you are looking for a needle in the haystack – all you need is the right (customized) tool.

With the introduction of “Tags,” we have moved customization one more step into the future. Now you can customize your tracking tools too. Create your own customized, unique Tags or use the pre-set Status and Tracking fields and add unlimited notes. Mark candidate records with meaningful Tags (like “assessment sent”) so you can quickly identify, search and retrieve those candidates any time you need them.

All searching and tracking features are available with every NewHire pre-employment application, regardless of which NewHire product you are using. NewHire puts employers in the drivers’ seat, allowing employers to customize the application, the screening and tracking of candidates.
